The monthly meetings which were postponed until September due to members holidays etc over the summer will re-commence but will now be held on the third Thursday of the month instead of Wednesday.

The Parade seems to get better, more colourful and bigger every year, and the turnout of residents and visitors to Prestatyn and the involvement by everyone concerned was fantastic.

Prestatyn Flower Show 2010

Following on from the Carnival is this weekend's annual Prestatyn Flower Show, which is always a wonderful event that the whole family can enjoy.



As always, Prestatyn Flower Show is held in the Vicarage Gardens, Prestatyn High Street across two days, this year its Friday 30th and Saturday 31st July, and a wealth of activities are planned.

Exhibits include flowers, vegetables, herbs, floral art, domestic, crafts, woodwork, classic cars, photography and art, with the paintings on show in the nearby library. There will be refreshments and cream teas on the lawn, plant stalls, children's entertainment, face painting and a Teddy Bears Picnic. The Hotfoot Jazzmen band and Rhyl Silver Band will be on hand and playing throughout both days.

Hopefully the sun will come out (there we said it) for two fantastic community days in Prestatyn.

Day 1 - Grand Parade and Carnival Attractions - Saturday 24th

Split over two days, Saturday features the Grand Parade, and this year the Mayor's Theme is 'Heroes and Villains' with a £100 first prize and the Mayor's Cup up for grabs! For more details on the range of competitions available, please visit the Mayor's Theme page at the official Prestatyn Carnival site.

The procession will assemble along Nant Hall Road, Mostyn Avenue and Clwyd Avenue from 10:30am to 11:30am and all those taking part should report to the Direction Steward outside Bodnant Junior School, Nant Hall Road for parade number by 11:15am. Judging of the Decorated Floats will take place at 11:30am in parade position. Presentation of the trophies will take place in Arena 2 at the Carival Field at approximately 1.30pm.

The parade will travel down Prestatyn High Street, turn left into Bridge Road, turn right into Pendyffryn Road, over the Railway Bridge into Bastion Road, turn right into Beach Road East and onto the Carnival Field where more fun awaits with several field attractions and funfair rides. Four large arenas will provide a mix of modern and traditional entertainment to delight the whole family. Entry to the field is free and adequate parking is available, ensuring Prestatyn Carnival provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to enjoy themselves. Disabled access, toilets and parking available.

Day 2 - "Fun on the Field" - Sunday 25th July 2010

Prestatyn Carnival is of course a two day event, so be sure to visit the Carnival Field on Bastion Road on Sunday 25th July. The fun continues from 10am with all the excitement of the fair and a host of field attractions including 'Prestatyn Baby and Child of the Year' Competition at 2:00pm in Arena 1, and Dancemania at 12:00pm in Arena 2. Performamania kicks off at 2:00pm in Arena 2. Compeition forms are available from Joy on (01745) 856692 with registration at 10:30am at the arena entrance.

Will the Friends of the Scala Cinema and Arts Centre float be seen again this year? You'll have to wait and see!

Rhiannon Hughes, chair of the Scala board, said that and the recession were the reasons why the Scala had failed to attract enough cinemagoers.

Now the centre, which lost £84,000 in its first year, is to get an £86,000 lifeline from Denbighshire County Council.
In return the council want seats on the Scala board along with a revised business plan to reduce the losses.

Cllr Hughes said that despite the losses everyone was positive about the Scala’s future but she conceded they were not where they wanted to be.

She said figures had been calculated on Marks and Spencer and Tesco opening close to the cinema but it had not happened and the Scala opened in the recession.

“But it isn’t about excuses. What Denbighshire has done now is make more money available to us in case we need it.

“As part of this support they have also put people onto the board to develop activities including daytime conferences and more corporate functions which we haven’t been able to develop. Everybody is very positive about it.”

“We have got to be grateful for the support Denbighshire County Council has given us. We want to get to the stage where there financial contribution is less.”

Cllr Hughes said the council decision to underwrite the Scala this year to £86,000 was based on the worst case scenario. The venue has received rave reviews, won scores of national awards and as well as screening the latest cinema releases has hosted a series of live events.

Cllr Hughes, who revealed The Scala would soon be able to screen 3D movies, said: “It has helped to regenerate the town. We have people from Bangor and Chester coming over to see our live performances.

“I would urge local people who haven’t visited us yet to come and see for themselves what we have here.”

“We are carrying out a survey to see what people have enjoyed most during our first year of opening. The numbers are up this year on last year as we would hope. It is such a fantastic facility and I’m sure we can develop it further with the added support of Denbighshire officers on the board.”

The facility was one of ten entrants in the Community Benefit category of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Wales awards held in Wrexham last week and made the final four shortlist before being announced as the category winner. Ruthin Craft Centre also made the shortlist.

The RICS Awards are internationally well established and are a high profile set of Awards within the built environment industry.

The Scala was developed by Denbighshire County Council, with support from Prestatyn Town Council, Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government. The Council also worked closely with the Friends of the Scala, led by Chair Sandra Pitt, in developing plans for the new facility and seeing them come to fruition.

Facilities at the Scala include two 150 seat digital cinemas (one permanent, one that seating can be moved to create a performance area), cafe bar, meeting rooms and exhibition space.

The RICS citation reads: "Scala is a wonderful example of dedicated people with the vision and the heart for the arts working together with public bodies to save a much loved building and see if regenerated for the benefit of the community. The owners of adjoining properties have refurbished their properties and the whole area has been economically regenerated because of the scheme.

Councillor Rhiannon Hughes, Chair of the Scala Board of Trustees said: "The Scala is a prime example of how all the agencies involved have worked together with the local community to turn around the fortunes of the building and create a facility of which local people can feel proud.

"The former Scala closed in 2000 due to structural problems and the local community said they wanted to building to be restored. That work began in 2007 with the building officially opened in 2009.

"To be awarded this second honour within six months is a feather in the Scala's cap and reaffirms the fact that the building is a facility for the local community."
